Michale Leibow - Bella 2013.  The third member of our party rock climbing on Mt. Whitney.

Michale Leibow - Wind Timber 2013.  One of the nick names for a Bristlecone Pine.  Often the tree is carved by the harsh winds from the Owens Valley.  It’s not unusual to find a tree like this with new growth on the leeward side.

Michale Leibow - Bristlecones 2013. Besides living at altitudes where nothing else survives (11,500ft) Bristlecones don’t grow tall but they can grow wide.  Less than a mile away, blocked by snow, stands a living Bristlecone with a girth of 37 feet.  They also are the oldest living thing known with living specimens now aged at over 5063 years.

Michale Leibow - Bristlecone Pines 2013.  Near patriarch grove, White Mountain, Bristlecone Pine National Forest.  For you trivia buffs White mountain is around 200 feet lower than Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous 48 states.

Michale Leibow - 11,500 ft., 2013.  White Mountain, Ancient Bristlecone Pines and the blue of high altitude.  Almost nothing grows at this elevation and the contrast is aided by a pale marble soil called dolomite.
